El Caliu de l’Eixample is a brasserie located in the centre of Barcelona (Valencia 329), which offers a classic formula which has been functioning perfectly for years, with meat as the star ingredient.
Making your way through the rustic decoration, you’ll find yourself in a place which could be a country house on the outskirts of the city, which you won’t quite believe is located in the centre of Barcelona.
The secret to this restaurant’s success is a formula which has no frills or fine print: an unlimited meat grill for €13.90. The set menu includes starters with salad, tomato bread, homemade croquettes, crunchy provolone cheese with oregano and meat pasties (which were very tasty, by the way). For the main course, it’s an open meat buffet formed up of Argentinian steak and entrails, strips of meat, grilled chorizo and chicken wings, as well as fried potatoes and unlimited corn on the cob. It basically works as a buffet libre, with the difference that your meat is prepared as you order and there’s table service.
The meat from the grill is not gourmet, but the quality’s not bad. Although it’s true that the grill buffet set menu doesn’t include drinks or desserts (total cost can easily go up to €17-€20), it’s true that the restaurant constantly offers numerous discounts and interesting promotions on its own webpage. So, for me, the fact that you can eat an unlimited meat buffet with everything else included for €11 (with discount applied), sincerely, is something it’s very difficult to find elsewhere in Barcelona. That’s why I liked El Caliu de l’Eixample, and it’s surely due to this excellent price-quality ratio that I’ve visited on so many occasions.
Apart from the grill buffet, el Caliu de l’Eixample offers other special combinations for all kinds of carnivore (and herbivore) and price points: the Slate-Grilled Meat Menu, Steak Menu and Vegetarian Menu. In some of these you’re given the option of preparing the meat yourself on a slate at your table, an interesting differentiator (although I should point out that it creates quite a lot of smoke and the smell fills the whole venue, which can make it a little uncomfortable…).
Service is friendly and efficient, you won’t be kept waiting for too long at your table, and if you’re still hungry, you can order as much as you wish.
El Caliu de l’Eixample is an ideal place for all meat-lovers, and a good choice for a relaxed meal with friends, work colleagues or family. It’s also somewhere where you can enjoy a Catalan calçotada at a reasonable price in the centre of Barcelona.
You shouldn’t expect gourmand delicacies from El Caliu de l’Eixample, nor detailed presentation. It’s a place to come to eat meat, a lot of meat, at a reasonable price in a central location.
